În Ajunul Crăciunului copiii îşi lasă pantofii lângă sobă pentru ca Pere Noel să le pună în ei darurile. Bradul de Crăciun este împodobit noaptea, pentru ca în dimineaţa de Crăciun copiii să găsească pe lângă cadouri un brad decorat cu dulciuri, fructe, nuci şi mici jucării.

Se mai serveşte carne de pasăre, şuncă, salate, prăjituri, fructe şi vin.
În partea de sud a Franţei în sobă este ars un buştean, suficient de mare ca să dureze de la Crăciun la Anul Nou. În trecut cenuşa acestui buştean era răspândită pe câmp, pentru a aduce recolte bogate.
În trecut, în fiecare familie franceză se pregătea "Prăjitura celor Trei Magi", care avea ascunsă în ea un bob de fasole. Cine îl găsea devenea Rege sau Regină pentru întreaga zi de Crăciun. Un alt obicei era ca de Crăciun copiii să plece în căutarea Magilor, având la ei grămezi de fân pentru a le hrăni acestora cămilele.
Şi în Franţa Crăciunul este o ocazie pentru întreaga familie de a se reuni, a se bucura, şi nu în ultimul rând de a se ruga. În Ajunul Crăciunului bisericile şi catedralele sunt viu luminate şi împodobite, iar clopotele bat pentru a-i atrage pe credincioşi. Odată cina terminată familia se duce la culcare, fără să uite să lase focul aprins şi pe masă mâncare şi băutură, dacă Fecioara Maria se va opri în casa lor. Copiii îşi lasa ghetele sau saboţii pentru ca Pere Noel sau Copilul Christos să le umple cu daruri. În nordul Franţei copiii primesc cadouri pe 6 decembrie, de ziua Sf Nicolae, în loc de Crăciun. Adulţii îşi fac unii altora cadouri în ultima zi a anului.
