,,The journey seemed to be going well, but one late afternoon, when the travellers camped at the foot of the mountains, the Captain noticed some smoke in the distance : Indians ! In the next few minutes arrows pierced the canvas of the wagons and the camp was in flames. There were shouts and yells, and cries. It was hell on Earth ! Flo thought it was the end. Half an hour later, the travellers were left counting the dead and the wounded . . . But not all the Indians were warlike people; some came to ask for gifts of tea, tobacco or sugar; others bartered bead belts, bracelets or necklaces for combs or mirrors.
Later on, the big family of travellers had to face another danger. The ground began to tremble and they all heard the dreaded noise of a stampede. A large herd of buffaloes came rushing by suddenly and wildly, almost trampling over the whole camp. The travellers were all tired, weak and desperate. Enthusiasm died, the journey seemed to have no end, they had no more supplies, and many died of starvation.
Exhausted and disappointed, at the end of their sixth week, the miracle appeared in front of their eyes. Smoke was coming out of chimneys, houses began to take shape in the distance and the closer they got, the better they could hear the noise of the town and the songs of the cowboys.”

Călătoria părea să meargă bine, dar după-amiaza târziu, când călătorii au tăbărât la poalele munților, căpitanul a observat un fum la distanță: indieni! În următoarele câteva minute săgețile au străpuns pânza vagonului, iar tabăra era în flăcări. Au fost strigăte și strigă, și plânge. Era naiba pe Pământ! Flo a crezut că a fost sfârșitul. O jumătate de oră mai târziu, călătorii au fost lăsați să numere morții și răniții. . . Dar nu toți indienii erau oameni războinici; unii au venit să ceară daruri de ceai, tutun sau zahăr; alte curele cu bile, brățări sau coliere pentru piepteni sau oglinzi. Mai târziu, familia mare a călătorilor trebuia să se confrunte cu un alt pericol. Pământul începu să tremure și toți au auzit zgomotul îngrozitor al unei lovituri. O turmă mare de bivoliți s-au grăbit brusc și sălbatic, aproape că au călcat peste toată tabara. Călătorii erau toți obosiți, slabi și disperați. Entuziasmul a murit, călătoria părea să nu aibă sfîrșit, nu aveau mai multe provizii, iar mulți au murit de foame. Îndepărtați și dezamăgiți, la sfârșitul celei de-a șasea săptămâni, miracolul a apărut în fața ochilor lor. Fumul ieșea din coșuri, casele începu să se formeze în depărtare și cu cât se apropiau, cu atât mai bine au auzit zgomotul orașului și cântecele cowboy-urilor.
