Numele Australia vine din latina "australis", ce inseamna sudic. Australia este singura tara care este si continent.Ca suprafata, este a sasea din lume si cel mai mic continent. Capitala si cel mai mare oras este Canberra. Peste 80 la suta din cetatenii australieni traiesc in orase, facand-o una dintre cele mai urbanizate tari din lume. Partea nordica a continentului Australian se afla in tropice si este cald tot anul. Inainte, toate continentele lumii  faceau parte unui continent urias. Regiunea care este acum Australia a fost separata de continentul urias acum 200 milioane de ani, ca ezultat, animalele Australiei s-au dezvoltat diferit fata de altele din tari diferite. De exemplu, marsupialele sunt animalele cele mai ciudate si faimoase ale Australiei. Australia are aproximativ 150 specii de marsupiale. Cangurii sunt simbolul Australiei. Familiile de canguri includ aproape 50 parti. Ursii koala, locuitorii padurii de est a Australiei  au fost aproape de disparitie in anii '20. Astazi, ursii Koala sunt protejati de lege.
