New Zealand War Memorial is a memorial to New Zealanders who died during the two world wars, is in Hyde Park Corner, and is diagonally opposite to the Australian War Memorial.
Designed by architect John Hardwick-Smith and sculptor Paul Dibble, memorial consists of 16 bronze pedestals shaped vertical cross placed in formation on a grassy slope. Each stool is adorned with small text, patterns and sculptures. The budget for the design and construction of the Memorial was $ 3 million.
The memorial commemorates the long-standing links between New Zealand and Britain, and the common sacrifice of the two countries in time of war.
In October 2004, 12 design teams were selected, out of 68 who expressed interest. These teams presented models for a monument, and a group of experts, appointed by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, selected the final project. The design was then finalized and presented to the Westminster City Council for approval. Memorial Project is a collaboration between Dibble Art Co. and Athfield Architects, led by sculptor Paul Dibble and architect John Hardwick-Smith, with Jon Rennie as the team's representative in London.
