The reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza during the events of 1848 Cuza was in the front lines. He spoke at the meeting at the "Petersburg" Hotel in Iasi, demanding democratic reforms. Among the leaders of the assembly arrested in the order of the ruler Mihai Sturza, there was also Cuza; then managed to escape from the guard and flee to Transylvania. Cuza has the opportunity to participate in the Great Assembly in Blaj from 3/15 May 1848, after which he retires to Bucovina.

During the reign of Prince Grigore Ghica he returned to the country and during the preparation of the Union he served as a janitor of Galati. As a protest against the falsification of elections for ad-hoc meetings in Moldova, Cuza resigned from office. Patriot with liberal, not radical ideas, Cuza was accepted even by the partisans of the two Sturza who were nominated by conservatives. On January 5, 1859, he was elected by unanimity of the votes of the deputies present in Moldova.

The reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, although short (1859-1866), was the period of maximum development of modern Romania. Through the recognition of the full union, the creation of the first single Parliament of Romania and the first unitary government, through its reforms: the adoption of the first Romanian Constitution, the electoral reform, the secularization of the monasteries, the agrarian reform, the education, the reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza laid the foundations of modern development Romania.
