the students were all in a fog = the student didn't understand anything
rain or shine = no matter what the circumstances are
to cast a cloud over = to become sad
to weather the storm = to have a difficult experience and to survive
lightning never strikes in the same place twice = one cannot have bad luck twice 

to make hay when the sun shines = to have the opportunity of doing something
the calm before the storm = a quiet period before a trouble
