I strongly agree with the given statement. Borrowing or lending can destroy friendships because they create certain expectations, if those aren't met then people get disappointed and friendships get destroyed.
For instance, I once lent money to a friend, it wasn't a large amount however what followed made me feel awful. After a while, he still failed to return the money and I found myself in a position where I needed them. He started making up all sorts of excuses and not ever to this day did I get my money back. 
What I learned from this experience is that borrowing or lending something is a very sensitive subject in friendships and it could destroy one at any time. 
Finally, I believe that lending or borrowing anything should be avoided just in order to stay on the safe side and ensure that your friendship ends up unaffected.
