My childhood memories are vivid. Much more vivid than memories of
yesterday. And my memories of summer holidays are the most vivid of all.
Holidays were the time you longed for.At school, you knew what to
expect – lessons on this or that, playtime, sports time, music time. It
was all so regular. You were programmed.
The long, wonderful summer holiday was the one time when you could forget about school. There was a moment, as school broke up, when you thought you had the whole world – and all the time in it – to be who you wanted to be. No clock was ticking.I will never forget being met by my mother at Victoria station as the holidays began. That journey was always the best of my life because I was escaping from something I didn’t much care for to someone I did – my mother. From that moment, I knew I was safe. I also learned to be happy on my own.
