Christianity was reintroduced in England by missionaries from Scotland and Continental Europe, St. Augustine (the first archbishop of Canterbury) and missionaries of Celtic Christianity in the north (especially Saint Aidan and Saint Cuthbert). The Whitby Island, in 664, the Church of England was totally Roman Catholic. The most recent Christian documents that survived the times include "The 7th Century Illumination of the Lindsfarne Gospels" and historical accounts written by Bede the Venerable. Norman nobles and bishops had an influence before the Norman conquest in 1066 and Norman influences affected later Anglo-Saxon architecture. The Edward Confessor was brought to Normandy, and in 1042 he brought masonry to work at the Westminster Abbey, the first Romanesque building in England. Norman cross-architectural churches have had profound changes and the tower remained in England a characteristic of ecclesiastical architecture. The parish churches were built, but also the first great cathedral in England. many early cathedrals including: York Minster (1080), Durham Cathedral (1093) and Salisbury Cathedral (1220). After a fire, the Cantenbury Cathedral was damaged and in 1174 Norman Masons introduced the new Gothic architecture. Around 1191 the Cathedral Wells and Lincoln Cathedral were brought into the Gothic English style. Pope Innocent III placed the Kingdom of England under a ban for seven years between 1208 and 1215 after King John refused to accept the Pope's proposal as Archbishop of Canterbury.
