The text tells the story of the Earl of Shaftesbury. He was a man that lived in England during the reign of Queen Victoria. He was a very generous, selfless and kind hearted man whose life revolved around helping the people in need, especially children. He was ambitious and helped establish laws that would prevent children from working the hard jobs that they were forced to do at the time such as: cleaning chimneys, working in mines or factories. The Earl was so generous that he once offered opportunities to men that were once thiefs to a new life. He also had empathy for animals. At that time donkeys were treated poorly by their owners so in order to educate people and motivate them to great their animals right he would offer a prize for the most beautiful and healthy donkey. He did so much for his community that when the day of his death arrived everyone was upset.
