It's Christmas Eve, and Della found herself out of money to buy Jim a Christmas present. All she has is $1.87. The only two important possessions that they have are Jim's gold pocket watch that belonged to his father and his grandfather, and Della's long hair.

Desperate she decides to sell it. She receives $20 and after some search she finds a platinum chain she saw in a shop window for $21.00. It was perfect for Jim’s pocket watch.

When Jim comes home, he gets confused and starts staring at Della. She admits that she sold her hair to buy him a present. Then Jim gives her the present he just bought for her. It was a pair of combs that she'd long admired, but are now completely useless since she's cut off her hair.

Then Della gives him his present, the watch chain. That’s when she finds out that he sold his watch to buy her the combs.
