The name "England" comes from "Land of the Angles" (in English: "England" for "Land of the Angles") referring to the Angles, a West Germanic tribe, who settled in the island in the 5th century and who came from the peninsula Jutland (today Germany and Denmark). Next to them settled 2 other western Germanic tribes: the Jutes (also from the Jutland peninsula) and the Saxons (from today's northwestern Germany). The Cornish name for England is Pow Sows, meaning "Land of the Saxons". It was so called because the Anglo-Saxons and other Germans from mainland Europe imposed the language and culture of the native Britons throughout England, except for Wales, Cornwall and Cambria.
