The ring dance of the waves
My old faithful poison, ever wand'ring woe
Let us build our dwelling on the ocean strand;
Little cares the inland if amok we go!
Waves are sympathetic, waves will understand.
Presently the twilight is made a recorder,
Ripple talks to ripple and gives full account,
My unwritten ballad overflows each border,
Falls down with the billow, with the billow mounts.
How the sea–vales deepen under the wind's plough,
What reverberations to my voice reply!
What ravines are moulded by the breakers! How,
When the earth keeps silent, do the waters cry!
