Originally, London was a Celtic settlement. In 43 AD Romanians founded the city of Londinium, and its name seems to have given the city's native name, London, although some recent data show that London may be Celtic in origin. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Londinium was abandoned; west of it appeared in the seventh century a Saxon settlement with the name Lundenwic, on the place where Aldwych is today. At the beginning of the 10th century, the old Romanian fortress was reoccupied. Initially, Westminster was a distinct city, but eventually London and Westminster integrated and evolved together, becoming the largest city in England, and since the twelfth century and the capital of the kingdom.
