When Friendship Fades

In the year 1154,when Henry II became King of England,Canterbury Cathedral was the most powerful religious centre in the country. The Archbishop of Canterbury recommended Thomas Becket, one of his faithful priests,to the King.Tall and thin, with dark hair and a pale face, this man, with an extraordinary memory, made himself agreeable to all around him and especially to the King.In a very short time the two became inseparable.Thomas, older than Henry by fifteen years, may have felt an elder-brother affection, mingled with admiration, for Henry's talents and charm. He helped and accompanied the King both in state affairs and in his private life.So Henry made Thomas Cancellor of England. As time passed,Thomas became as rich as the King,if not richer. He lived like a prince in a palace surrounded by seven hundred knights.
Everything was fine, but after seven years,in 1161,things changed drastically.Although Thomas didn't want it,Henry named his Archbishop of Canterbury, the highest religious position in the land. This turned Becket into another man. What a change there was!Thomas found himself in the company of only twenty wise old men, wearing poor clothes, always praying, and helping people in need.He changed both his outlook and his way of life.
Soon, the two old friends found themselves in an antagonistic relationship.Henry hoped to control the church with Becket's help, while Thomas wanted to protect the rights of the church against the Crown.Things got so bad that finally Henry took all the Archbishop's possessions and exiled his family.
But Thomas had become very popular. This made Henry ask in fury ‘Will none of these idle people who eat my bread rid me of this troublesome priest?’He hardly knew what he said. The King's violent words were misinterpreted by four of his knights who,on the 29th of December, went directly to Canterbury and cut Becket down with their swords right on the steps of the altar. When the King heard about the crime,he became so desperate that he locked himself in the castle for five weeks.Later,he went to Canterbury to mourn on his friend's tomb.So did many others who loved Becket.
Three years later,Becket was made a saint and people all over the world, both famous and unknown, started to visit his tomb.Ever since then,Becket's shrine has become one of the most popular in Europe.Canterbury Cathedral has become a place of pilgrimage for sick people going there in hope of a miracle cure.
