Which film was your big break?
My first big part was when I played Emma. I loved the part. On the whole I prefer smaller films, like Sliding Doors and Shakespeare in Love, to big Hollywood blockbusters. When they offered me Kate Winslet's part Titanic, I didn't take it. It wasn't my sort of film.
How did you feel when you got the Oscar for you role in Shakespeare in Love?
I was over the moon. I couldn't take it in at first. I was so overcome with emotion I cried. I was so proud of the film. It was witty, corourful and dramatic. It had everything.
What are you plans for the future?
I've been working non-stop for the last few years and at the moment I dont don't want to take on anything new. I've read a number of scripts but I haven't decided on anything yet.
