First of all: not all teens hate reading! I know lots of young people (including myself) that devour books. We like them because they’re fun and interesting and they provide us an escape from real life (since usually teenage years are when a person starts to understand the real world is a lot tougher than they thought when they were still a kid). But, I’m aware a lot of teens don’t like reading (or claim to…) so here are some potential reasons:

They think it’s not cool. Plenty of teens would probably be fine with reading, or even enjoy it, if they’re weren’t afraid they’d be made fun of for doing it. You probably know how it is when you’re a high schooler: you get labeled. If you’re a popular kid or an athlete, you’ll 100% be mocked and called nerdy if you’re into books, and to some kids, being accepted by their peers matters a lot!

They think reading is boring. These are kids who’ve never read for fun because they’re not aware that reading can be fun. They’ve grown up being told books are boring. They’ve only ever read the books they’ve been been assigned in class, which quite frankly are often pretty boring, or just not the kind of book they would actually enjoy.

They’re not very good at it. Some people just aren’t naturals at reading. They might be dyslexic, or they might just not have the talent for it’s just like- just like some people arent great at math or art. Of course that doesn’t mean they can’t get better, or enjoy it anyway, but it might be a little embarrassing to admit you’re not great at reading, and let’s be real- it’s just not that much fun to struggle through something you aren’t good at!

They don’t have time. The life of a teenager is busy. What with school and homework and sports and activities and food and a social life and getting enough sleep at night, it can be really hard to find time to relax with a book- and when teens do have free time, reading just might not be their first choice of an activity, so they might never get around to it.

There are obviously more reasons and it depends from person to person, but those are the ones that came to me immediately. If you have a teen who claims to hate reading, I’d suggest this: just ask them why they say that. Usually, something can be done about the reason- a little teaching to help them improve, some bookstore/library searching to get them the kind of book they’d actually enjoy, etc.
