Americans tend to be poor spellers when making political signs.I'm not quite sure why this is....
Americans are extremely hard-working. Overall, this is a good thing. But one could argue that they actually work too hard, and for too little reward. They understand that hard work equals success. But I suspect that many of them would rather have more free time to spend with their families, or just to stop and smell the roses. They envy the fact that Europeans & other western nations get so much time off.
Americans have a lust for life, zeal and overall positivity that is unmatched. They strive to live life to the fullest. They are go-getters. They have no shame in getting what they want and enjoying the fruits of capitalism. However, one could argue they view the world through rose-colored glasses, to the point of it being detrimental.
Americans are incredibly innovative, but also reluctant to change. This is one of the most interesting dichotomies of the American culture. Americans bring so much to the world in terms of ideas, technology, and "outside of the box" thinking. Yet in other ways both big and small, they are very stuck in their ways. This is the country that invented the automobile, harnessed electricity and invented the computer, but is unable to implement a simple EZ-PASS system on highways, or even get rid of the penny. There's too much opposition.
These disgusting things are still around.
Americans tend to think that Americans are the ones who invent everything. In the bullet above, I stated that an American invented the automobile. This is a common misconception held by many people - and I was one of them. But it isn't true. While Henry Ford invented the assembly line, the first steam, electric, and gasoline-powered vehicles were invented by French, Scottish, and German inventors. (Thanks, Martin Strohmeier and User)
Americans are in denial about lots of things. It's as if they don't want to admit that their way of doing things doesn't produce optimal results for the greatest number of people. However, they are starting to see that maybe, just maybe, the world is changing in ways that is outside of their control. And that their old formula for success needs to be tweaked.
Americans are accepting of other people. There is a stereotype that America is a racist country that I feel is dead wrong. Sure there are pockets and strains of racism that still exist. But those who say Americans are generally racist is wrong. They are not a racist culture. In fact as a whole, America is one of the best examples of a multi-cultural melting pot the world has ever seen. They are also forgiving and don't dwell on past failures - both of which are very good things not found in many other cultures.
Americans are religious. Much more so than many other western countries. But this is trending downwards with the younger generations.
Americans are too focused on money, and yet really bad with money. This isn't something that is often talked about, but they have poor financial education from the time they are in school, to the credit card debt & student loans they saddle themselves with, to the house they cannot afford, to their inability to adequately save for retirement & future heath care expenses. There is just a staggering amount of ignorance in financial matters.
Americans are politically complacent. They understand that the pendulum of power has swung from citizens, to government, and finally to big business. They understand that the system needs major reform, yet American Voter Turnout is Lower Than Other Wealthy Countries. Another big dichotomy. I've thought about this for ages and don't have a good answer here. Your guess is as good as mine.
Americans are ignorant about the rest of the world. I don't really think I need to spend too much time on this one.
Americans have a great sense of humor. (Need proof? Check out this shameless self-promotion!) If Germans are the least funny people in the world, I'd argue that Americans are the funniest. It's part of their sunny, positive nature to laugh at the complex absurdity of the human condition. After all, this is a country that reacts to a black man rescuing kidnapped white women by auto-tuning his news interview with a reporter. Ohio neighbor Charles Ramsey's words become 'Dead Giveaway' song
Americans are not particularly happy. I'm sure I'll get some flack for this, but I really believe this to be the case. So many Americans are just miserable, plain and simple. And it sucks, because they want to be happy so badly, and feel that they should be. Feel that they deserve to be. This is, after all, the only country in the world that guarantees the right to pursue happiness in their Constitution. But they have not figured out that pursuing happiness and having happiness are two different things entirely. The result is that many Americans are just...angry.
