The British monarchy, as it is commonly referred to, is United Kingdom’s monarchy as per the constitution. It is also recognized as such in all United Kingdom’s territories overseas. This essay explains the various roles played by the British monarchy. In the essay, I will first give a brief background history of the monarchy and brief information about its operations. I shall then state and explain the roles of the British monarch: the Queen who heads the Monarchy state as well as the general role of the entire monarchy structure.

In modern day Britain, the monarch takes the title of "Queen". The monarchy in Britain can be traced back to as early as the year 1000. History suggests that the Scottish and England kingdoms had then developed from the medieval kingdoms of earlier times. In 1066, Norman invasion took place. Harold II, who was an Anglo-Saxon monarch, was killed after being defeated. The Monarch’s political powers were reduced by the Magna Carta in the 13th Century. James IV, who was a Scottish king, became the English king; the two kingdoms were now under one Monarch. In 1801, the Great Britain kingdom was established after the absorption of Ireland to the kingdom. The Britain kingdom expanded all over the world. After World War II, most of the colonies which were under Britain attained independence (Waldron & Jeremy 56). The large empire ended. The present king at that time was King George VI who was later succeeded by Queen Elizabeth II.
