In my opinion, the statement "God helps those who help themself" has a valid meaning for more reason. It has been proved scientifically that motivation can be self-made. By imposing to a person God's existence, there would be created some mental processes which will boost person's activity and therefore the person's results.
After all, having faith in God gives you faith in yourself.
