"Can" si "Be able to" sunt folosite pentru a exprima abilitatea,capacitatea de a face ceva. De cele mai multe ori, se pot folosi amandoua, dar nu intotdeauna.

✦"Can" este verb modal, "Be able to", nu. In cazul celui din urma, verbul 'be" trebuie conjugat la timpul cerut.

✦Atunci cand este vorba despre o abilitate in prezent, putem folosi  can sau be able to.

ex. He can speak French.

     He is able to speak French.

✦Atunci cand este vorba despre o abilitate in trecut, putem folosi could sau be able to .

ex. He could swim when he was five.

     He was able to swim when he was five.

✦Atunci cand avem o abilitate in viitor, folosim doar be able to;

ex. He will be able to swim next year.
