Past simple în engleză se formează după o simplă regulă generală - adăugarea terminației -ed la rădăcina verbului, sau doar -d, în cazul în care verbul se termină deja în e.

Există totuși și verbe ce nu urmează această regulă. Acestea se numesc irregular verbs - verbe neregulate. Avem două mari categorii de verbe neregulate:

• verbele ale căror formă rămâne aceeași ca forma de infinitiv când sunt trecute la past simple: Put->Put; Cut->Cut; Set->Set; Cost->Cost; Hit->Hit.
• verbele care nu urmează nicio regulă când sunt trecute la past simple: See->Saw; Build->Built; Go->Went; Do->Did; Rise->Rose; Am/Is/Are->Was/Were.
