It is appropriate for students and teachers to be friends on facebook

First of all, facebook is a better way to connect and let others know you better by sharing the things you like, the music you listen and your ideeas, without being bullied for them. If a teacher is friend with a student on facebook, he will get to know better the student and learn how to approach or to help through the things he saw the student enjoys mostly.
Secondly, if a student and a teacher are friends on facebook the comunication between them can get easier by using the messenger for questions or remarks. So if the student has questions about a topic he can just ask on private.
The last but not the least, a teacher can observe a student better if they are friends on facebook, and get to know if the student has problems, if he is sad or if he needs professional help. And it works both ways ,so the student can also follow the teacher activity, see that he/she has same hobbies and the relationship between them maybe turns into a friendship. 
In conclusion, it is indeed appropriate for students and teachers to be friends on facebook, because as I already mentioned it helps with getting to know  each other and makes the studying more pleasant.
