Nowadays the media is a part of our lives, flooding us with information on all channels. It’s hard to imagine a time not so long ago when the media was owned by the state and offered almost no real information.

A country’s democracy relies on mass media to unmask wrongdoing, bring issues to people’s attention, and raise awareness of issues so the authorities are pressured to act. Without the media, the authorities lose touch with reality and are able to do whatever they want.

No media freedom grants huge power to the leaders. In time, they do all they can to continue to silence the media as they do bad things they don’t want the public to know about. Without the media we are in the dark.

Until over decade ago the main medium was television, and in many cases such as rural areas and certain countries it still is. However arguably the most powerful medium lately is the Internet which offers access to any piece of information at any time. People with different opinions can find supporting arguments and other people with the same convictions. We can communicate over the internet, which is not true of any other media.
