St. Valentine, or Valentine of Terni (Latin. Valentinus) is a martyr declared to be a saint of Roman Catholic Christians, who lived in the third century, being a bishop in Interamna (today: Terni, Italy). St. Valentine does not appear in most old list of Roman martyrs, Chronography of 354, although the patron of the compilation of the Chronography was a rich Christian named Valentinus. [1] However, it is found in Martyrologium Hieronymianum, [2] which was compiled between 460 and 544 from previous local sources. The feast of St. Valentine on February 14 was first established in 496 by Pope Gelasius I, who included Valentine among those "... whose names are honored among men, but whose deeds are known only by God. ". As Gelasius suggests, nothing about his life was known.
According to the legend he would have known a pagan with a Christian, he would give the young people in love flowers in his garden and he healed the sick. He was accused of "religious uniting" the couple in love, despite the command of Roman Emperor Claudius II (268-270). Therefore, he was sentenced to death and executed on February 14, 269, because of his faith.
Today, Valentin is considered the patron saint of lovers. In honor of Valentine's Day, in the United States and newer and in the European states, there are parties and balls. Lovers make gifts. In the Orthodox calendar, Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated on July 30.
