Romania is a state that appeared in the Middle Ages, whose territory was initially limited in the north by the Carpathian Mountains and a line starting from the Vrancea Mountains to the east of the fortress Chilia inclusive (later by the rivers Milcov, Putna and Siret), in south of the Danube from Turnu-Severin to Silistra inclusive, and east of the Black Sea (later the Danube and the boundaries of the district of Ibrahila or Proilavon, ie Brăila). Its inhabitants used the endonym of "Romanians", the usual exonyms used until the modern era being "Vlachs" or more scholarly and recently "Wallachians". The Moldavians called them "Muntenians".
Nowadays, the name refers exclusively to the geographical area in the south of modern Romania, between the Danube, the Carpathians and the rivers Milcov, Putna and Siret.
