In my oppinion also books and tv are a source of information. The difference is that tv offers us information linked to present and books offers us a larger perspective about things that already happend.
Books are a good way to find out information about other cultures, history etc. Tv is a good way to get information about the weather, for example.
The most important thing besides information that both books and tv are offering us is that both are a good way of entertaining.
When i am bored i either watch tv or read a book. My favorite tv shows are mtv shows and my favorite books are the 'Harry Potter' series.
