Moldovans across the Dniester
In the mid-seventeenth century, the Russian Empire, with Don Cossacks, permanently threatened the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Hanat. As a result, in 1677, 40,000 Turkish soldiers, joined by several thousand Moldavians and Cossacks (led by the Hittite Gheorghe (Iurie) Khmelnytsky, the son of Bogdan Hmelnitski), besieged the rebellious Cossack castles, the Cehir (Cighirin ) but the assault fails. In 1678 the attack was resumed by an army of 80,000 Turks, to which will be added 30,000 Tatars, 4,000 Cossacks and the Moldovan-Montenegrin contingents (with the rulers Antonie Ruset and Gheorghe Duca) of 10,000 soldiers. The Cechir was conquered on August 28, 1678, and the fortifications were destroyed to the ground. The war continued until 1681 when the Bahcisarai treaty ended, whereby the Tsar recognized Turkish rights to Ukraine "below Chiev", from the Dnieper to the Dniester. Hatman of Ukraine was named Yuri Hmelnitski and then Duca voda himself, who became also the ruler of Moldavia. Duca Voda led two countries: Moldova and South Ukraine. Duca Voda also participated in the Second Vienna Siege, but on his return to the country he lost Ukraine and the reign of Moldova was replaced by Petriceicu-vodă (1683) [101]
In a census in 1793, between Nistru and Bug in 67 villages, 49 were exclusively Romanian (102)
In the Herson region, in 1893 the following Moldovan villages are registered: Iasca, Gradiniţa, Sevartaica, Belcauca (towards Ovideopol), Malaiesti, Floarea, Tei, Cosşarca, Buturul, Perperita, Goiana, Siclia, Corotna, Cioburceni, Speia, Caragaciu, Dorotcaia, Voznisevsca (on Bug). In Podolia are registered the Moldavian villages: Lescova, Ruda, Ivanet, Rogozna, Studeniţa, Lipciani, Serebia, Camenca, Pietrosul, Slobozia, Domniţa, Balta, Moşneagul, Senina, Bursucul,
Also in 1893, according to official figures, there were 532,416 Moldovans in Herson and Podolia, in Ecaterinoslav 11,813, and in Crimea 4,015. Reviews on real numbers go up to 1,200,000. Since the middle of the 14th century there were over 400 Romanian villages in Transnistria [104]
In April 1920, large peasant riots broke out against the Soviet regime; the rebellions led by Tutunica occupied Balta, the rebellion stretching in the Codam and Ananev districts. In 1922, under the leadership of Chirsula, the revolt re-emerged. After their sacking by the Soviet regime, mass deportations were made
