Midas is a semi-legendary character; he was, according to ancient Greek mythology, the king of Pessinus, a fortress of Frigia, known for his ability to turn anything touch into gold.
The first legend says that Midas, the frigid king, was the son of Gordius. At one point, Silenus, drunk, wandered from the cortege of the god Dionysus, to travel from Thrace to Frigia. Because Midas treated Silenus well, which had been found in the king's rose gardens, Dionysus promised him that, as a reward, he would fulfill his every wish. Greedy of riches, Midas asked to turn anything he touches into gold. Dionysus fulfilled his wish, as he had promised. To Midas's horror, however, when he wanted to feast, he could not put anything in his mouth because, as soon as he touched the food or drink, they turned to gold. Shot down by hunger and thirst, Midas then asked Dionysus to rid him of his burdensome gift, even though he was enriching him more and more. The god urged King Midas to bathe in the waters of the Pactolus River. As soon as he did so, Midas became a common mortal again.
