King Charles I, on his name Carol Eitel-Friedrich-Zephyrinus Ludwig, was born on 8 April 1839 in Sigmaringen, being the second son of Prince Carol Anton of Hohenzollern, the governor of Renania.

He had a military education, graduating from the upper cadet school in 1856, and in 1957 those of the Berlin School of Artillery and Genius. In 1864 he participated as a volunteer in the Austro-Prussian war against Denmark.

In 1866, after the abdication of Alexandru Ioan Cuza and the refusal of Philip of Flanders to take over the reign of Romania, Carol was offered the throne of this country. Carol was elected president of Romania following the plebiscite held between April 2-8, 1866. He arrives in the country on May 8 and two days later, takes the oath to the Chamber of Deputies. The Ottoman Empire recognized Carol as the ruler of Romania on October 11, 1866, when he issued the firm's investiture.

In September 1869, while in Cologne, Carol met Princess Elizabeth, whom he married on November 3 of the same year at Neuwid.

In 1872, Carol I bought a 1,000-acre land in Sinaia to build Peles Castle. The works began in 1873 and were completed in 1883.

In 1877, taking advantage of the military conflicts in the Balkans, on April 4, he concluded a military convention with Russia, allowing the passage of Russian troops on the territory of Romania south of the Danube. On April 29, the Assembly of Deputies declares war on the Porte, and at 9 and 10 May respectively the proclamation of Romania's state independence.

From June 1 to July 1, 1878, the International Congress in Berlin, where Romania's independence was recognized, took place. On 9 September of the same year, the Council of Ministers decided that Mr Carol would be called the "Royal Highness."

In 1879 the 10th of May began to be celebrated with a double meaning: the coming of the throne to Mr. Carol and the proclamation of state independence.

On November 21, 1880, Carol I issued the act by which his brother-nephew, Prince Ferdinand of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, became the heir to the throne of Romania.

On March 14, 1881, the Romanian Parliament voted for the country to be transformed into a kingdom. King Carol I's crowning ceremony took place on May 10th to celebrate the celebration of 15 years of reign. The crown was made of the steel of a cannon captured in 1877 at Plevna, and the queen's crown was made of gold.

In 1906, to mark the 40th anniversary of King Carol I and the 25th anniversary of the proclamation of the kingdom, a national exhibition illustrating the development of Romania was organized on the Filaretului Hill.

King Carol I has received many distinctions from other heads of state. On the side of Emperor Wilhelm II he received, in 1909, the field armor of the German army, and in 1912, Tsar Nicholas II gave him the marshal of the Russian army.

In 1913, he took part in the Second Balkan War alongside the Serbian-Greek coalition, after which he took over the Cadrilater.

The First World War triggered a strong emotion for the King, as the Crown Council summoned him on 21 July at Peles Castle to establish the neutrality of the country, despite the fact that the monarch had expressed the wish to participate with the Triple Alliance.

Carol I died on 27 September 1914, after a long suffering, being buried at the Curtea de Arges Monastery.
