Northern Ireland was created in 1921, when Ireland was divided into Northern Ireland and South Ireland by an act of the British Parliament. Unlike Southern Ireland, which became the Irish Free State in 1922, the majority of the population of Northern Ireland was unionist or loyalist, and wanted to remain in the United Kingdom. [4] Many of these were Protestant colonel descendants in the UK; however, a significant Catholic minority was nationalist or republican, and wanted a united Irish, independent of the English rules.
Northern Ireland is the site of conflicts between Roman Catholics and Protestants that have resulted in many casualties over time (3,000 dead and 50,000 injured).
