The epic stories from the Bible,were extremely attractive to Black Americans.Ironically, Christian religion was introduced to them by the white people who bought ,sold and kept them slaves,but wanted to save their souls.As the only literature the Negroes knew,the Bible was very important for them,and they added their intense sense of rhythm,resulting in a more musical religious service.Hymns and psalms were sung by ministers who called out one line and the congregation responded in a chorus thus emerging in the nowadays style called "gospel singing".
