Why are many students obsessed with getting very goo an excellent marks?

The students are obsessed with getting very good or excellent marks because those marks help them a lot.They can save the students from repeating the year or from having a bad-payed job (in the fututre).They care about their grades and that's a good thing,but it doesn't have to become an obsession.
