"Ștefan cel Mare si Sfânt" Public Garden is the oldest park in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. It was designed and furnished in a classical manner.
It is believed to have been planted in 1818. The plan was drawn up by the architect and cadastral engineer of Bessarabia Ozmidov in 1816-1817. The main works began in 1825, when the cadastral engineer Bogdan Eitner laid out the avenues, trees and shrubs were planted, including 1,000 acacias. The Public Garden took its final shape in 1835. Later, the entrances, two artesian fountains with a depth of 13 m, recreation pavilions, scribbles, 2 clocks were arranged. Access to the park was paid. Until 1863 the park was surrounded by a cane fence, replaced by a wooden one, then by a stone wall, at the decision of the City Hall, and finally by a cast iron fence, designed by Alexander Bernardazzi.
In 1885, the bust of Aleksandr Pushkin was mounted here, and in 1928 the statue of Stephen the Great. In 1958, the Alley of the Classics was set up with 12 busts of the classics of Romanian literature, to which, starting in the 1990s, busts of some great Romanian literati from the 20th century were added. There are 50 species of trees in the park, some specimens of mulberry and acacia reaching the age of 130-160 years.
