Adolescenţa reprezintă perioada de tranziţie dintre strea de copilărie şi starea de maturitate a individului şi debutează cu modificările psiho-fiziologice pe care le antrenează pubertatea. Totodată adolescenţa este o vârstă a derutei, a marilor idealuri, a alteregoului. Adolescentul se află într-o perioadă la care nu se poate iubi fizic decât în privirea persoanelor străine. Mai mult decât atât, acesta are nevoie de un al doilea eu pentru a exista; deocamdată nu e capabil să întrepătrundă relaţii armonioase cu ceilalţi deoarece nu se cunoaşte suficient de bine şi nu e destul de sigur în privinţa propriilor limite corporale şi psihice, trăind relaţiile cu celălalt ca un potenţial pericol. 
Adolescentul este tentat în mod inconştient de o repliere narcisistă asupra propriei persoane.
