Roald Dahl was a British novelist, short story writer, poet, screenwriter, and fighter pilot. His books are known for their quirky characters, dark humor, and twist endings. Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales to Norwegian parents, with four sisters and a brother. His father died when Dahl was three, and his mother soon remarried. Dahl's early childhood was spent in England and he was educated at schools in England and Wales. He began writing in his teens, but his career as an author began in 1941 with the publication of his short story, "A Piece of Cake", in an American magazine. Dahl served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, where he became a fighter pilot. He flew combat missions in the Middle East and Europe, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, Dahl returned to writing. His first children's book, The Gremlins, was published in 1943. Dahl's best-known works include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, and James and the Giant Peach. He also wrote adult novels, such as My Uncle Oswald, which was adapted into a 1979 film. Dahl died of a blood disorder in 1990 at the age of 74.
